On the Move - The Great Migration

The Great Migration is a clockwise, 600 mile round-trip journey that takes over a million wildebeest, plus hundreds of thousands of gazelles and zebra in search of seasonal pasture and water. After calving in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area (Tanzania) in the south, the herds move northwards through the Serengeti and across into the Maasai Mara (Kenya). After replenishing on the nutrient-rich grass of the Northern Serengeti and Maasai Mara, they move south again for the calving season. It is the largest herd movement of animals on the planet and can even be seen from space. This natural spectacle is both thrilling and profoundly moving, as only the fittest survive. 

In June the first herds from the wildebeest migration began to arrive in the north, ahead of schedule, with around 100,000 wildebeest and zebra crossing the Sand River and fanning out on the surrounding plains of the Northern Serengeti and Masaai Mara. Guests currently at Angama Mara, Sayari,  Mara Plains Camp and Cottar's 1920's Safari Camp are enjoying a front row seat to watch the drama of nature's "greatest show" unfold.
