Breaking News: The Migration has Arrived

The great migration is now moving through the Northern Serengeti and Maasai Mara. As with every year in recorded history, the herds follow the rains and consequent grassy abundance, moving across Tanzania's Serengeti into Kenya's Maasai Mara, then back again.

However, this year promises to be even more spectacular due to the rivers having swelled with abundant rain, creating treacherous conditions for crossings. That has created difficulties for the arriving hordes of wildebeest and attendant zebra, but good news for their crocodile predators.

For the next two to three months, regular river crossings are expected. Guests at camps such as Sayari, Singita Mara River, Kuria Hills, Mara Plains, Serengeti Bushtops and Cottar's 1920's Safari Camp gain a ringside seat to this high drama, as patient carnivores intercept herds of herbivores floundering across the Sand and Mara rivers.

 As Derek Joubert, co-owner of Great Plains Conservation with his wife Beverly, recently described: "Our camp staff were talking about it the whole day. It started as an odd sound and then gathered momentum to an unsettling cacophony. This situation annual explosion of energy started with the very first pathfinder wildebeest. Right behind him, a small following family plodding forward. But behind them... a wall of grunting, groaning, moaning wildebeest in their thousands and hundreds of thousands, and these are the leaders!"
