Sighting of the Quarter: The Tale of Two Litters
1/31/2025
In an extraordinary twist of fate, two pregnant wild dog females from the Chaos Pack in the Okavango Delta, Botswana, gave birth to separate litters of pups, raising them side by side. This rare occurrence has captured the attention of guides at Chitabe Camp. In a stunning display of social cooperation, the alpha female adopted the pups from the subordinate female, allowing the pack to continue hunting while ensuring all pups were cared for.

Wild dogs typically experience a high mortality rate, but this time 9 out of the 14 pups survived their first year. This exceptional level of cooperation within the pack has provided new insights into the social dynamics of these highly endangered predators. The Chaos Pack, now 25-strong, continues to thrive, offering guests of Chitabe a high likelihood of observing these endangered animals.
